Basic Computers

Introduction

Computers using vacuum tubes as their electronic elements were in use throughout the 1950s, but by the 1960s had been largely replaced by transistor-based machines, which were smaller, faster, cheaper to produce, required less power, and were more reliable. Computer main memory comes in two principal varieties: random-access memory or RAM and read-only memory or ROM. Computer networking is another form of I/O. Computers have been used to coordinate information between multiple locations since the 1950s. Computer operating systems and applications were modified to include the ability to define and access the resources of other computers on the network, such as peripheral devices, stored information, and the like, as extensions of the resources of an individual computer. Computer hardware may fail or may itself have a fundamental problem that produces unexpected results in certain situations. Computer, the flagship publication of the IEEE Computer Society, publishes peer-reviewed technical content that covers all aspects of computer science, computer engineering, technology, and applications. Computer security is an increasingly important consideration. Computer software is a general term used to describe a collection of computer programs, procedures and documentation that perform some tasks on a computer system.

Computers

Computers can be generally classified by size and power as follows, though there is considerable overlap: personal computer : A small, single-user computer based on a microprocessor. Computers have begun to meet the barrier imposed by the speed of light in achieving higher speeds. Computers developed along two separate engineering paths, producing two distinct types of computer—analog and digital. Computers are categorized by both size and the number of people who can use them concurrently. Computers with advanced productivity and multimedia tools for home office applications. Computers can be complicated, delicate and even dangerous. Computers that meet minimum standards will be refurbished where possible, and then resold in Goodwill retail stores where the proceeds support the non-profit agency’s job training and career services. Computers do not know English, so people must tell their computers to do things by speaking the computer's language. Computers can do anything that someone can tell them to do. Computers are able to solve mathematical problems because a programmer has told them how to solve math problems. Computers are used to control factories, which used to be controlled by humans.

Program

Programs and data that are not currently being used in main storage can be saved on auxiliary storage, or external storage. Programmers also conceive, design, and test logical structures for solving problems by computer. Programmers usually write programs according to the specifications given by computer software engineers and systems analysts. Programmers generally know more than one programming language, and because many languages are similar, they often can learn new languages relatively easily. Programmers also update, repair, modify, and expand existing programs. Programmers working on a mainframe, a large centralized computer, may prepare instructions for a computer operator who will run the program.

Software

Software stored in ROM is often called firmware, because it is notionally more like hardware than software. Software refers to parts of the computer which do not have a material form, such as programs, data, protocols, etc. Software that mimics learning and adaptation is part of artificial intelligence. Software applications for word processing, Internet browsing, Internet faxing, e-mail and other digital messaging, multimedia playback, computer game play and computer programming are common. Software is of great importance; the usefulness of a highly sophisticated array of hardware can be severely compromised by the lack of adequate software. Software and operating systems for tasks such as network management, client management, and storage management.

Data

Data are entered into the computer and the processed data made available via input/output devices. Datamonitor estimates the contract to be worth approximately $25m. Datamonitor estimates the contract to be worth approximately $30m over three years. Datamonitor estimates the contract to be worth approximately $36m over three years. Data descruction options starting at $5 per unit. DataTraveler 150 USB Flash drive is big news in mobile storage.

Business

Business computers acquired color graphics capability and sound, and home computers and game systems users used the same processors and operating systems as office workers. Business donors can deduct the un-depreciated value of the computer, and individuals can deduct the current market value of a computer. Business skills are also important, especially for those wishing to advance to managerial positions. Business success lies in using powerful systems that help your personnel make the most of their time, and maximize your resources.
